Are not doing these things costing you a lot more $$$?

First off, lets start with a fancy term – Preventive Dentistry.

It’s a pretty straightforward term that means “dental treatment and care designed to prevent future complications or surgeries.”

It is includes all the routines necessary to fully care for your teeth to keep them healthy. It includes the prevention of things such as cavities, gum disease, enamel wear, and more. It may even help prevent the need for root canals and other procedures.

There are many things one can do to help maintain a bright and clean smile. One of the biggest is visiting your dentist at least twice a year for a routine cleaning. At Alpine Village Dental, these are inexpensive and go a long way to help prevent future emergencies.

Keep reading to learn more about the steps you can take to keep your teeth healthy.

1. DON’T GO TO SLEEP WITHOUT BRUSHING YOUR TEETH

It’s not new news that the it is recommended that we brush at least twice a day. However, many of us continue to forget to brush nightly. A good brushing before bed gets rid of many of the little germs and plaque that build up throughout the course of the day.

2. BRUSH FULLY

Brushing technique is equally important as frequency  — in fact, doing a bad job of brushing your teeth is almost the same as not brushing in the first place. A wild brusher? Precise brushing? Fast and furious brusher? Whatever you brushing style, be sure use those circular motions to remove plaque. It’s the plaque we don’t remove that comes back to haunt us tomorrow.

3. DON’T FORGET THE TONGUE

Don’t leave out one of the biggest parts of your mouth… your tongue. Keep it health and clean and it’ll go a long way.

4. FLOSS IS THE TOOTHBRUSHES IMPORTANT ASSISTANT

Not only does it help keep things clean, it simulates the gums.  Flossing just once a day is often enough to get amazing benefits.

5. MOUTHWASH IS YOUR FRIEND

Okay, we’ve all seen advertisements on T.V. promising that this mouthwash or that mouthwash will change our lives. But honestly, a little mouthwash can go a long way. You don’t have to travel to the far reaches of the globe to get a decent mouthwash. Go with the brand you trust. Make it a regular part of your routine. And you will be glad you did.

6. DRINK A LOT MORE WATER

Depending on how much you drink now, you might want to up your water intake. Drinking water regularly can help to keep your mouth clean and fresh.

7. CUT BACK THAT SUGAR

We’ve been told since we were children that sugar rots the teeth and while there may be many different recent tests, it is a safe bet that lowering sugar intake and the intake of acidic foods can assist in keeping a healthy tooth enamel.

8. VISIT YOUR DENTIST AT LEAST TWICE A YEAR

While your own everyday routines play a crucial role in your overall oral health, even the most diligent brushers and flossers out there need to see a dentist yearly. Minimally, you should see a dentist for a cleaning and an exam at least twice a year. Not only can a dentist remove plaque and look for cavities, but they can also spot issues before they arise and help prevent needless worry.
