Are Root Canals Safe?

The term “Root Canal” can often seem very scary. But we promise, it’s more simple and straightforward than you may know. In fact, not having the procedure done can bring about way more discomfort and complications than most of us realize.

Root canal treatment is a simple and straightforward procedure to relieve major and minor dental discomfort and to save your teeth. Patients usually need this procedure when there is infection or inflammation in the base (roots) of a tooth. During root canal treatment, a dental specialist carefully removes the inside the tooth, cleans, disinfects and shapes it, and places a sealant to make it stronger.

Root Canals treatment is needed when the pulp (soft tissue inside the tooth), becomes inflamed or infected. The infection or inflammation can lead to other major dental issues if not addressed immediately. There can be quite a few causes of this inflammation: deep and harmful decay within the tooth, incorrect dental care, a crack inside, a chip in the tooth. In addition, an injury to a tooth may cause pulp damage even if the tooth has no visible chips or cracks. If  this is left untreated, it can cause a lot of pain or lead to other unwanted complications.

After full root canal procedure has been completed, the tooth continues to work like any other tooth.

After the full root canal procedure is done (which can sometimes two or more visits) you need only practice good oral hygiene, including brushing, flossing, and regular checkups and cleanings. For most people, repaired teeth last just as long as natural teeth.
