Dental Implants

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are inserts that Dr. Sheth fits into your jaw bone to provide a base for replacement teeth. She uses titanium implants, which are biocompatible and lower the risk of an allergic reaction. Over time, the bone grows around the base of the implant to hold it securely in place.

Why would I want dental implants?

Dental implants are a permanent way of restoring your smile and giving you back your confidence if you’ve lost a tooth. They also enable you to eat properly, as a missing tooth can hamper your ability to chew.

It can be cumbersome to have a gap in between your teeth. A gap in your teeth may negatively impact your speech and can be a potential breeding place for bacteria that may lead to gum disease and tooth decay.

Dentures are a viable alternative to implants, but dental implants have the benefit of being permanent, whereas dentures need ongoing cleaning and maintenance.

What happens during the dental implantation procedure?

Dr. Sheth carries out the implantation procedure in two stages:

Stage one

Dr. Sheth surgically inserts the dental implant into your jaw bone. A local anesthetic numbs your jaw so you won’t feel any pain. Once the implant is in place, Dr. Sheth gives you a diet plan to follow, as you need to eat soft foods while your mouth heals.

Following implantation, you wait for the bone to grow around the base of the implant. This process is called osseointegration, and when it’s complete, bone surrounds the implant as if it were a new tooth root.

Stage two

Stage two typically takes place after osseointegration is complete. Before fitting the new tooth, Dr. Sheth attaches an abutment onto the main implant, which is a connector post designed to hold the replacement tooth in place. New teeth are custom-made to ensure they match the teeth on either side and fit perfectly in the space.

When the abutment is fixed to the implant, Dr. Sheth fits the new tooth, making sure it’s in exactly the right position so that it looks and feels natural.
