Root Canal

What is a root canal?

A root canal cleans out infected material from a decaying tooth and seals it to prevent further infection. If the infection is left untreated, the affected tooth may need to be pulled. Having a root canal, however, gives you the chance to save the tooth.

After successful root canal treatment, there’s a chance your tooth could last for the rest of your life with correct care.

What could cause an infection in my teeth?

Infection usually starts with tooth decay, which is primarily due to poor dental hygiene and eating an excess of sugary foods. Sugar provides an ideal food source for bacteria on your teeth, causing them to rapidly multiply. If the plaque they thrive in isn’t removed regularly with brushing and flossing, you’re likely to develop receding gums and weakened enamel.

When bacteria get into the gums at the root of the tooth or find a weak spot in the enamel, they can cause an infection. This damages the pulp and nerve endings inside your tooth. You may develop an abscess, and infection can spread to the jaw bone in some cases. The infection causes tooth discoloration and increasing levels of pain that ranges in severity.

What happens during a root canal?

Before your surgery, Dr. Sheth takes X-rays of your teeth so she can see how far the infection has spread. She anesthetizes your jaw so you won’t feel any pain, and covers the area around your tooth with a sheet to protect it during the procedure.

The root canal takes place in five stages:

  • Dr. Sheth makes an entrance into your tooth
  • She removes the infected tissue from inside the tooth
  • The inside of your tooth is thoroughly cleaned
  • Dr. Sheth puts a flexible tooth filler into space
  • She fits a temporary crown or filling onto the tooth

The tooth is likely to feel sensitive after the root canal procedure, but over-the-counter pain relievers should make you more comfortable.

Dr. Sheth fits a temporary crown or filling while the tooth heals. After it heals, she fits a permanent crown or filling in your mouth.
